Pic Translator?
As the old saying goes, a pic is worth a thousand words. I would very much like to hear what words will come out of your mouth when you see a pic of a Japanese traffic sign for example. I’m guessing you’ll be like “I wish I learnt a little bit of Japanese before I came here, because I can’t even begin to imagine what the signs says.” Of course, I had to be polite here; the words coming out of your mouth may not be so polite.
The thing is that if you have an iPhone and the right app installed on said iPhone, you don’t need to learn Japanese. The app can act as a translator for you – again, as long as it has the right app by its side.
The right app in this case is the Fotozio-developed PicTranslator. Getting back to the example presented above, here’s how the PicTranslator app works. You take out your iPhone, fire up the app, and take a pic of the Japanese road sign that left you scratching your head in bewilderment. The app will analyze the pic and tell you what the traffic sign says. See, you don’t have to learn Japanese as long as you have your personal translator at your fingertips.
The nice thing about the PicTranslator app is that it doesn’t work with road signs alone. You can also snap a pic of a map, a newspaper, a warning sign, a menu, or any high quality text. The app will analyze the photo and quickly provide you with a fairly accurate translation.
When you purchase the PicTranslator app, you get but one language. You can then purchase additional languages – if you need them. There are several available for purchase.
The functionality this app has to offer is amazing. You just take a photo of a text, menu, or sign and it will rapidly provide you with an accurate translation. This will definitely come in handy when you’re abroad and you don’t understand the local language.
Pros
- Nice interface
- Easy to use
- Takes very little time to give you a translation and the translation is impressively accurate
- For selected languages, it supports pronunciation of text found in the photo
Cons
- When you purchase the app you only get one language; you have to purchase additional languages
